Our Exciting Dreary Adventure through Cosmic Cavern

Trudging down the steep narrow stairs of Cosmic Cavern, for the first time, a little over two years ago, was a new and exciting experience for me. We were warned to watch our heads because the cavern dripped and some of the soda straws were extremely long and getting longer. Jackets (rain jackets) and a hat were a must, in this environment, also a pair of non-slip boots wouldn’t hurt either. Some of the walking surfaces are slick and it is easy for one to fall down.

We stopped for a quick photo shoot while exploring the Cavern in August 2018.
Also, I opted to take off my Visor for better lighting.

My older sister and I had a fun time trekking through the cavern and taking in all of the facts. She is a chemistry teacher, by trade, and loved asking tons of questions and sharing in the “insider” science jokes, our awesome tour guide would tell. Because I have a passion for photography, she’d slow down enough to allow me to capture the perfect shot, even when it seemed inconvenient.

FUN FACT: All of the photographs, you see here, were shot by me. If you see something you like, a print or digital download can be arranged!

All the light was artificial, and it would have been pitch black had it not been for all the lamps that were placed around the cavern, we wouldn’t have been able to see anything, especially with it being over 400 feet below ground level. However, being over 400 feet below ground level meant that the cavern would always be a cool 64° F, no matter the temperature above ground! 64° F is also a great temperature for preservation. If you think about it, normally museums are on the colder side, so people often plan ahead and bring a light cardigan or sweater to wear while viewing the art and artifacts. Just remember, in this cavern, one might get wet from the drips, therefore please plan accordingly!

We ventured through tight, narrow passageways to enter deeper parts of the cavern, having to duck to avoid hitting our heads on the soda straws above, as we crouched down through the passageway, we saw fun little unexpected displays in the cervices of the cavern. Those little displays harped a chuckle out of us, unashamedly. Once we arrived at the end, we saw a couple of human sized surprises that would generate some fun conversations, such as a bottomless lake and a ladder leading us up somewhere exciting.

At the top, you have, yet, another great place to snap a photo. Get your Cavern Companions involved to make it more fun and memorable, because this is a place, you do not want to forget about! It’s almost like one is walking through ancient ruins, but there really are no ancient ruins to be found. Instead, one is stumbling upon years and years of geological history, deep below the earth’s surface, in person, and without the barrier of plexiglass, that is old, fogged up, and dirty from everyone else’s fingerprints getting left behind, on the glass.

Taking the time to really explore nature really does wonders on a person’s well-being and is such a good reminder of how long the earth and all its elements have been here, and just how short of a time us, as people, have been here, in comparison. Our lives cans span 100 years or slightly more, the earth has been around 100 times longer than a single life span. Therefore, would it not make more sense to try to preserve what we have had for millions of years, instead of strip away everything that is left?
